Friday Update

Happy Friday,

I hope that you all have some great plans to look forward to this beautiful weekend. This week we started learning about the research process, how to take notes, close reading text, and how to answer questions using the RACE method. They took their first unit pretext this Monday which is "Noticing Change". It covers standards RL5.3 (compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).

Another fun part about being in 5th grade is the independence and along with the independence comes responsibility. To teach about leadership wee have a Upper Elementary leadership group, a student council made up of 5th and 6th grade representatives. Each homeroom has a representative elected by those in the class. We took time on Friday for Student Council nominations in my homeroom. After getting the parent permission form we will announce them on Tuesday!

Next week:
We will continue our Native American unit
Continue individual reason conferences
Learn about presenting our information to others

Reminders:
Major Saver fundraiser was sent home today with the students. Make sure they bring in the money they get each day so they will get the cards immediately and are not responsible for holding on to the money.

Also,  my classroom phone's voicemail box is currently not working. If you need to get a hold of me please email me. I will let you know when it is fixed
Learning to research
Close reading practice

The story we close read. Such an inspiring story if you get a chance, have your students tell you about it.
